How do I maintain my new windows and doors?

Maintenance depends on the material and finish, but most of our products are designed for low upkeep. We provide care instructions with every purchase and are happy to advise you on long-term maintenance.

1. Frame Materials

Each frame material affects insulation, strength, maintenance, and aesthetics:

Vinyl (uPVC) Low maintenance, affordable, good thermal insulation

Aluminum Strong, slim profiles, poor insulation unless thermally broken

2. Glazing Options (Glass Types)

Glass impacts energy efficiency, noise reduction, and safety:

Single Glazing One pane of glass; poor insulation

Double Glazing Two panes with air or gas in between; better insulation

Triple Glazing Three panes; superior insulation, used in cold climates

Low-E (Low Emissivity) Microscopically thin coating reflects heat; improves thermal performance

Tempered Glass Heat-treated for strength; shatters safely

Laminated Glass Two panes with PVB layer; increases safety and soundproofing

Toned/Tinted Glass Reduces solar heat gain and glare

3. Energy Efficiency Ratings

Important for thermal performance and energy savings:

U-Factor (U-Value) Measures heat transfer (lower is better)

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) Measures solar heat entering (lower = less gain)

Visible Transmittance (VT) Measures visible light transmission (higher = more light)

Air Leakage (AL) Measures infiltration of air (lower is better)

R-Value Resistance to heat flow (inverse of U-Factor; higher is better)

4. Operating Styles

Affects ventilation, usability, and sealing efficiency:

Fixed Non-operable, best insulation

Casement Hinged at side, swings outward; tight seal

Awning Hinged at top, opens outward; good for rainy climates

Slider One or more sashes slide horizontally; space-saving

Single-Hung Bottom sash moves up/down

Double-Hung Both sashes move; better ventilation

Tilt & Turn European style; tilt in for ventilation or swing in for full opening

Bay/Bow Multi-panel projecting windows; aesthetic and space-enhancing

5. Gas Fills (for insulated glass units)

Improves thermal insulation:

Air Least efficient, most common in low-cost windows

Argon Cost-effective, improves insulation

Krypton Better insulator, used in narrow triple glazing

Xenon Best insulator, but expensive

6. Spacer Technology (in double/triple glazed windows)

Reduces heat transfer between panes:

Aluminum High conductivity, older tech

Warm-Edge Spacer Lower conductivity, reduces condensation

Foam Spacers Best thermal performance

7. Additional Specs

Sound Transmission Class (STC) Measures noise reduction (higher = better)

Condensation Resistance Indicates ability to resist interior condensation

Impact Resistance For hurricane zones; uses laminated or reinforced glass

Smart Glass Electrically tinted, privacy or shading on demand
